Cellphone Stand
Many people have cellphones that can play video and audio. In this project, you will use the Engineering Design Process to create a new original design for a cellphone stand that makes it easy to view the screen and improves the sound for the viewer.
You will need to learn how to design for and cut on the laser cutter, which will be used to cut the parts for your stand. You can use materials that are available in the classroom, or you may bring in materials if they will be acceptable for cutting on the laser, check before cutting anything from home.
While this is an individual project, you are encouraged to collaborate with your classmates to help make everybody's design the best possible.
10 Notes on design During this project, you will be gathering information about how other people have designed for similar problems, what products are available on the market and how you think it could be done best. These notes should include drawings, photos, advertisements of existing products and evidence of your cellphone stand's development.
10 Make an initial design Use simple, quick and easy to work with materials for your first idea of the cellphone stand. use this design to do testing on how it works.
20 Test your designs As you build designs, test them. You should make notes on how the cellphone sits on the stand, how the sound is handled by your stand, and how you should improve each version. You should make a combination of physical handwritten notes, pictures of the successes and problems, and design files.
20 Evolve your design The design that you end up with will be the result of several cycles through the Engineering Design Process. You will need to build a model, test it out, redesign it and build it again. Save the evidence of your work redesigning the stand to show how your idea evolved to become better.
10 Poster explaining your design Make a poster of the design explaining how it works and why it is the best design possible. Include photos of your stand, your name, the name of your stand and text explaining how it works and what you have done to make it the best design possible. Your photos should be clear of clutter, and should show just the important features that you have designed into the stand. People should be able to look at your poster and understand that you have thought carefully about your design and crafted a cellphone stand that solves the problem of holding a phone and redirecting the sound to the viewer/listener.
20 Portfolio of the project In this project, you will be making and testing designs, searching for the best you can make. In this process, you will make several models, lots of notes, and gather materials that help support your research into the best design. You should make pictures of each of your designs and the process you use to make them. Collect all of these items and organize them in a neat and presentable portfolio.
10 On Time Get your work done on time.
5 Extra credit Video Make a 60 second video of your design where you explain what you did and how your design is the best possible you could come up with. post the video on Youtube or Vimeo. When making an account, do not use your last name or other identifiable info in the user name. The video should not include identifiable images of students.
5 Extra credit Make an instructable on Instructables.com where you explain how to make a design like your best one. Include files , photos and instructions to help other people make one just like yours or better. You can include your video in the instructable. When making an account, do not use your last name or other identifiable info in the user name. The pictures, text and information should not identify any student individually.

10 Notes on design | There are handwritten or typed notes on each of the designs. Notes include photos of the model and details about what needs to change 10 | Notes include info about the designs, but lack some detail, some photos 8.5 | Notes have info about most of the designs, some photos that show the design 7.5 | Notes are missing detail about the design and changes needed No photos 6.5 | No notes 0 |
10 Make an initial design | The first design is a quick build that gets the basic concept into the world. Card stock, tape and paper are appropriate materials. 10 | No record of initial design 0 | |||
